Joseph Jake Berning, Sr. was born in Lismore, MN, March 20, 1917 to George and Amelia (Koessler) Berning. He died April 27, 2008, at the Graceville Holy Trinity Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He attended Catholic school in Lismore and moved to Beardsley with his family in 1928. He finished his education at the Hi-Lo Country School of Beardsley.
On October 4, 1944 he was joined in marriage to Genevieve Hendricks, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. They moved to a rural farm northwest of Beardsley where they made their living off the land and from this marriage were blessed with 5 children. After 23 years on the farm they moved to the town of Beardsley in 1967. They resided there until 1987. They then made their home in Clinton and Graceville, respectively, to the present time.
Joe enjoyed many years providing for his family raising various livestock and crops on the farm and later by raising just hogs. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his many relatives.
Due to illness Joe was no longer able to work as hard, but he loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He never turned down the chance to play cribbage, Yahtzee and of course enjoyed his trips to the casino. He treasured and appreciated his friends and caretakers at Grace Home the past 2 years, where we was able to renew old friendships and make new ones. Joe loved to share his many stories and memories of the Good Ol' Days.
He is survived by: his wife Gen of 63 years, daughter Bonnie (David) Baysinger of Fairmont, MN; sons, Joe (Deb) Berning of Ortonville, Tom (Mona) Berning of Willmar, MN, and Ed (Vicki) Berning of Beardsley. One sister Verna Holden, of Sartell, MN, sister-in-law, Betty Berning of Wadena, MN; Grand Children: Angela (Rusty) McCormick, Luke (Jenny) Baysinger, Jason (Shelly) Berning, Jennifer (Troy) Cronen, Casey (Erik) Dunker, T.J. (Lisa) Berning, Heather (Brent) Groos, and Hilary Berning; great-grandchildren: Gavin & Griffin Groos, Reese & Tyce Cronen, Drake Berning, Madison & Ian Baysinger, Caleb & Gabriella Dunker, and MANY nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: one daughter, Shereyl Berning; granddaughter, Melissa Lee Berning, and great -granddaughter, Angel Lee Cronen; parents, George and Amelia Berning, one sister, Leona Buls, 3 brothers; Lawrence, Lee, and Jerome, two brother-in-laws; Ray Buls, and George Holden and a sister-in-law, Helen Berning.
