John Frickson

Funeral services for John L. Frickson, age 60, of Big Stone City, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2009, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. John died on Friday, January 16, 2009, at his home. The Reverends Benjamin Pollock and Thaine Kister will officiate. The scripture readers will be Gavin Angerhofer and Jessica Eidem. The organist will be Paul Hamman and a duet will be sung by Laura Berger and Paul Hamman accompanied by Mr. Hamman on the piano. Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Monday for a family prayer service. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Monday one hour before services. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Odessa, MN., with military graveside rites presented by the Gertje-Van Lith American Legion Post #229, Big Stone City, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren: Jerome and McKenzie Swensen, Takara Ehlebracht, and Brandon LaVoie; step grandson, Josh Ernst; step great granddaughter, Anahbelle Ernst; Mike Seez; Natasha Hynnek; Jody Biever; Laurie Schuler; Gavin, Marsha, and Lizzie Angerhofer; Pat Kunz; Laura Berger; Paul Hamman; Lloyd and Karen Tillma; Ron and Shirley Lundborg; Cindy Bogenrief; Brenda Prasnicki; Jessica Eidem; and Dixie Poppen. Active pallbearers will be Dan Carlson, Jerome Swensen, Eric Angerhofer, Jodell Larson, Jody Anderson, and Brian Schnaser. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Odessa, MM. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Emanuel Lutheran Church Pre-School in Milbank instead of flowers.
John Lyle Frickson was born on February 23, 1948, in Ortonville, MN, the son of Richard and Esther (Gutzman) Frickson. He was baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Odessa, MN, and confirmed at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. John attended Koch Elementary School and Milbank High School for two years. He obtained his GED. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from Jan. 31, 1968, until his honorable discharge on Jan. 29, 1971, with the rank of Specialist E-5. John helped build roads in the Mekong Delta of southern South Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Marksman (Rifle). John served in the SD National Guard, 740th Transportation Co., in Milbank, for six years, with a final rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was married to Kay (Ehlebracht) Thompson for thirteen years. Two children, John and Tonya, were born to this union. John worked for Hunter's Granite Quarry, Cold Springs, and Dakota Granite as a quarryman for over twenty-five years. He then worked for Frigo Cheese in Big Stone City, SD, for seven years, Del-dee Foods in Appleton, MN, for three years, at the prison near Appleton, MN, for nine months, and then worked as a custodian at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank for seven and one-half years.
John was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, the Grant County VFW Post #3486, the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9, and the Milbank Chapter 19, Disabled American Veterans, all in Milbank.
He especially enjoyed woodworking and cars.
Survivors include his son John Ehlebracht and wife Teresa of Canby, MN; his daughter Tonya Lynn Ehlebracht and friend Brian Schnaser, of Milbank; four grandchildren: Jerome and McKenzie Swensen, Takara Ehlebracht, and Brandon LaVoie; one step grandson, Josh Ernst; one step great granddaughter, Anahbelle Ernst; two sisters, Rosemary Goetschius, Milbank, and Cheryl Folk and husband Howard, Blaine, MN; half-sister, Betty Wellnitz, Palm Desert, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dean and David Frickson, and two nephews, Craig Wellnitz and Scott Folk.
