Joanne Frieda (Veen) Schmig was born on January 2, 1943, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of John and Mabel (Dockter) Veen. Joanne grew up on the family farm north of Milbank. She attended rural school at Melrose #3 and graduated from Milbank High School. She was united in marriage with Stanley Boone. They traveled the area and lived in several locations as Stanley worked road construction. They were blessed with three sons: Bob, Leslie, and Roy. Leslie passed away as an infant.
Joanne settled in Milbank and began her career at Milbank Mutual Insurance Company. She started working as a clerk and was proud to have been promoted to the first woman underwriter for the company. She loved her job and was a dedicated employee.
Joanne was united in marriage with Dennis Schmig on July 12, 1982, and gained four children: Theresa, Denise, Nathan, and Becky. Joanne supported Dennis with his cattle business by working on the farm, driving 4-wheeler, attending cattle shows, and keeping the books. Together they operated a successful business.
Family was so very important to Joanne. Her children, grandchildren, and family were her greatest joy. She treated other children like they were her own, giving them loving care and attention. Joanne taught her kids to drive vehicles and 4-wheelers. She could fix anything! She had her own tool kit and seldom needed help fixing anything that was in need of repair. She was tough, strong, and a survivor, but she had a gentle and tender heart. She enjoyed playing board games and cards with her grandchildren and neighbors. She was a fabulous cook and her family will treasure the memories of the great meals that she provided.
Joanne was a faithful member of Living Word Lutheran Church. She was active with Bible studies and was a Sunday School Teacher.
Joanne is survived by her daughters-in-law: Toni Boone of Twin Brooks, SD; and Karla Boone of Blomkest, MN; children: Denise (Troy) Kluess of Shakopee, MN; Nathan (Cherri) Schmig of Minneota, MN; and Becky (Greg) Moorse of Minneota, MN; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings: Charles (Nadine) Veen of Twin Brooks, SD; Harold Veen of Milbank, SD; Arnold (Carol) Veen of Milbank, SD; and James (Sherri) Veen of Milbank, SD; brother-in-law, David Hammer of Milbank, SD; sister-in-law, Vivian Sagness of Sioux Falls, SD; and many other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Mabel; husband, Stanley; infant son, Leslie; sons: Bob and Roy; husband Dennis; daughter, Theresa; sister, Joyce Hammer; and brother, Martin Veen.
