Joan K. (Giese) Clifton was born on July 8, 1944, to parents, George and Geneva (Jones) Giese, on the family farm near Appleton in Swift County, MN. As a young girl, she attended country school District 48 in Odessa Township and later graduated from Ortonville High School in 1962. Following her graduation, Joan attended the University of Minnesota in Morris.
On July 11, 1965, Joan married William Clifton in Ortonville, MN. Together the couple made their home near Ortonville and were blessed with a daughter, Holly. Joan worked for a number of years as a telephone operator with Northwest Bell. She also worked for the Ortonville School system as a cook and later as the Head Cook. In 1969, Joan underwent a kidney transplant, receiving a kidney from her 60 year old mother, Geneva. Twelve years later she had another kidney transplant in 1981.
Joan loved to do many things; visiting family and friends, riding motorcycle with Bill, riding horse, roller skating, sewing and making quilts, reading a book all night, going to garage sales, going to craft fairs, planting flowers in her garden, selling her flowers, and even making crafts from the dried flowers she grew. While in her garden, she enjoyed the company of many different cats. One of her latest enjoyments was becoming a Grandma. The thing she was best at was making others laugh and bringing joy into their lives. She loved Jesus and shared with others what God had been doing in her life.
Joan passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at the Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, ND, reaching the age of 62 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Geneva; her father-in-law, Norel Mathison; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Giese and Kathy Weinman.
