Joan Barutt, age 93, of Graceville, MN, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Essentia Health – Grace Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Monday. Fr. Brian Oestreich will celebrate the Mass and interment will be at Graceville Consolidated Cemetery.

Joan Rosina (Hoeschen) Barutt was born on August 23, 1930, in Freeport, MN, to John and Margaret (Fabeck) Hoeschen. Joan spent her formative years in Freeport, MN, with her seven siblings.
On May 26, 1951, Joan was united in marriage with Herman “Whitey” Barutt in Freeport, MN. The two made their home in Devils Lake, ND. They moved to Twin Valley, MN, and later Minneota, MN. Eventually, they settled in Graceville, MN, where she resided until her passing.
Joan's educational journey led her to earn a high school diploma and graduate from Freeport High School with the Class of 1948. As a devoted homemaker, Joan created a warm and nurturing environment for her loved ones. Her selflessness knew no bounds, and she devoted her time and love to raise her 10 children. Joan's boundless love and support were a constant source of inspiration for her children.
Throughout her life, Joan was an active member of her community and found fulfillment in serving others. She served as a dedicated member of the Graceville High School Board and offered her assistance in the school library and study hall. In addition, Joan opened her heart and home as a trusted daycare provider, sharing her nurturing spirit with many children over the years.
Joan's faith was an integral part of her life, and she was a devoted member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. Her commitment extended beyond attending services, as she served as the principal of the CCD Program and had the honor of receiving the esteemed Bishop's Award for her outstanding contribution and dedication to the church community.
Beyond her community involvement, Joan cultivated her passions and hobbies. As a member of the Lakeside Quilters Guild, she embraced the art of quilting, creating intricate pieces that showcased her creativity and precision. Her love for bowling, golfing, sewing, cuisine, and baking, especially her renowned cookies, brought joy to all those who had the pleasure of experiencing her creations. Joan also canned the produce Whitey’s gardens produced and even taught many family members how to can. Family was Joan's greatest treasure, and she showered her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with boundless love and affection. Their laughter and smiles brought immeasurable joy to her life.
Left to cherish Joan’s memory are her children: Dennis Barutt of Becker, MN; Margaret “Peggy” (Ed) Adams of Rapid City, SD; Michael (Linda) Barutt of Graceville, MN; Herman Barutt of Wheaton, MN; Edward Barutt of Graceville, MN; Theresa (Ordean) Kopfmann of Minneota, MN; Daniel (Jill) Barutt of Charlevoix, MI; Thomas (Rhonda) Barutt of Cavour, SD; and Christa (Marvin) Achtenberg of Hot Springs, SD; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman “Whitey” Barutt; son, Philip “Popper” Barutt; brothers: Leo Hoeschen, Jr. and James Hoeschen in infancy; and sisters: Evelyn Hart, Helen Becker, Jeanette Brickweg, Beatrice Pryatel, and Viola Ware.
