Jennie Bernice Cooper was born on January 25, 1921 to parents Herbert and Hansema (Anderson) Cooper in Odessa Township. She grew up in the Clinton area. Jennie was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church and confirmed on August 25, 1935 at Bethany Lutheran Church. She attended District 10 County School in Clinton, Clinton Public Schools and Clinton High School: graduating in 1940.
In 1942, on March 9, Jennie was united in marriage to Victor Carlson. They resided in Clinton, Ortonville, and Wilmot before moving to Big Stone City in 1946. To this union, they were blessed with seven children: Gary, Ronald, Kay, Gerald, Rick, Dan, and Julie. They were able to go on a couple trips because of Victor’s work at Dakota Granite, in 1974, they traveled to Hawaii and in 1976 they visited Florida.
In 1978, Jennie lost Victor after just 36 years of marriage. After he died, Jennie moved into the Big Stone Apartments in Big Stone City and began working at the Cottage Inn. In her life, she also worked a couple years at the canning factory and spent some time picking potatoes on the Rabe Brothers Farm.
On October 22, 2007, Jennie moved into the Northridge Residence in Ortonville. Jennie was a very caring person; she would never speak a bad word about anyone. She enjoyed cooking, baking and making her signature hotdish. Her family would frequent her home after work for coffee, orange juice and home baked cookies. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially King’s Corner and 31, watching the Minnesota Twins baseball games and playing Bingo.
Family meant a lot to Jennie. She loved spending time with all of them. She never missed a birthday and would always send cards. She will be greatly missed by all of them.
Jennie died on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Northridge Residence in Ortonville, MN having lived to reach the age of 88 years.
She is survived by her children: Gary (Marilyn) Carlson of Ortonville, MN, Ronald (Deb) Carlson of St. Cloud, MN, Kay (Doug) Harberts of Dawson, MN, Gerald (Pam) Carlson of Big Stone City, SD, Rick (Angela) Carlson of Groton, SD, Dan (Kim) Carlson of Big Stone City, SD, Julie Wiese ( Mike Reiffenberger) of Big Stone City, SD; 22 grandchildren; 34 Great- Grandchildren; 3 Great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Helen Weeden of Wilmont, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jennie is preceded in death by her husband Victor; brothers: Melvin “Jim” Cooper and Carl “Jack” Cooper; sisters: Evelyn Kohl and Margaret Carlson; son-in-law Lee Wiese; and grandchildren Michael Carlson and Nicole Carlson.
