Jeanne Porter

Memorial services for Mrs. Jeanne Marie Porter, age 80, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Milbank. Reverend Colleen Natalie-Lees will officiate. Jeanne died on Friday, November 17, 2006, at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. The pianist will be Julie Ludwig and the soloist will be Jeff Natalie-Lees. Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall behind the sanctuary by 10:00 a.m. Tuesday to attend services. There will be no visitation. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 1000 N. West Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104.
Jeanne was born on April 20, 1926, at Britton, SD, the daughter of Leslie and Nora (Lyle) Chapin. She graduated from Clear Lake High School, Clear Lake, SD. Jeanne graduated from General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison, SD, with a two-year teaching certificate. She taught in a country school near Clear Lake for two years. Jeanne was united in marriage to Mylo E. Porter in July 1947, at Aberdeen, SD. Following marriage, they resided in Milbank. Jeanne and her husband owned and operated the Brite Spot CafAC. for several years. She and Mylo worked together in two Drive-In restaurants, one in Milbank and the other in Morris, MN. Jeanne did the bookkeeping and accounting when Mylo began building homes in Milbank and the surrounding area and also cabins at Linden Beach on Big Stone Lake. At the time of her husband's death on April 10, 2006, she was residing in the Alzheimer's Unit of Beverly Healthcare, now the Golden Living Center, in Milbank.
Jeanne was a very kind and tender-hearted person who loved kids and animals. She also enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her son Mark, Boston, MA; one sister, Mary Ellen Lunde, Coon Rapids, MN; one brother, Roger Chapin, and his wife Jeannette, Clark, SD; her two sisters-in-law, Janice Langum, Sinai, SD, and Irene Porter, Brookings, SD; her brother-in-law, Dick Porter, and his wife Thelma, San Diego, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mylo, and her brother, Thomas Leslie Chapin.
