Jean G. Stengel, formerly of Milbank, died at the age of 86 on February 18, 2012 in Naples, Florida, while in hospice care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank, SD, followed by a private family interment at the Milbank Cemetery.
Born on February 9, 1926, in Milbank, South Dakota, Jean was the twin sister of Joan and the daughter of Patrick and Mayne (Scholtes) Gannon.
Jean's family moved to Detroit her senior year of high school where she graduated from St. Cecilia's. She married Robert B. Jones in Huntington, West Virginia, and they were blessed with two daughters. She worked for the Veterans' Administration for many years as a purchaser. Bob died suddenly at the age of 50.
Jean and her daughters moved back to Milbank to be closer to family. She devoted several years to writing and authored the book For Crying Out Loud, which was later published under the name Time Out For Grief. She traveled, speaking to groups about coping with the loss of a loved one.
She met James Stengel, an old classmate, and they were married in 1979. She loved spending summers on Big Stone Lake and winters in Florida - reading, playing cards, fishing, and playing the slots. She relished traveling the world and taking her blended family on numerous vacations.
Jim passed away in 2006 and Jean moved in with her twin sister Joan and sister Evelyn in Naples, Florida. She always felt very blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Leigh Ann Bury of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jan Martin and husband Todd of Rapid City, SD; her step-children: Debra Stengel of Sarasota, FL; Cindy Cheatham and husband Tom of Durango, CO; and Jim Stengel and wife Julie of Casper, WY; her grandchildren: Clint Bury of St. George, UT; Amber Jean Pate of Sioux Falls, SD; and Alexis Bransted and Marina Martin, both of Rapid City, SD; her step-grandchildren: Anthony and Noelle Stengel of Casper, WY; Michael Stengel of Casper, WY; and Mark Stengel, Jr. of Fort Thompson, SD; and her great-grandchildren, Rhodes Pate and Dexter Stengel. She is also survived by her two sisters, Joan Ewing and Evelyn Gannon, both of Naples, FL.
