James Haanen, age 96, of Browns Valley, died Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the Browns Valley Health Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dwight Fearing officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Casket bearers will be Jeff Haanen, Greg Haanen, Dylan Haanen, Isaac Haanen, Tory Peterson, and Tony Miller. Honorary bearers include Roger Haanen, Pat Miller, Jeff Medbery, Pastor Dwight Fearing, Jim's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
James George Haanen was born on the family farm in Arthur Township, Traverse County, MN, on November 10, 1918 to Anthony and Sara (Cuff) Haanen. He attended country school in Arthur Township through the eighth grade. On December 5, 1938, Jim was united in marriage with Phyllis McLane. To this union, they were blessed with one son, Roger.
On March 1, 1944, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in Wheaton, MN. He served as a tug man and plane spotter at Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii. On January 4, 1946, Jim was honorably discharged and returned to Browns Valley.
A true outdoorsman, farming was Jim's passion. He began farming at an early age, continued farming with his son and two grandsons for many years, and finally retired at age 80. Even after retirement he continued to work outdoors in his garden. Although primarily a farmer, Jim also worked on the railroad for eighteen years. Jim also enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising various types of farm animals, and playing cards.
Jim is survived by his son, Roger (Janet) Haanen of Browns Valley; grandchildren: Greg (Cari)Haanen, Tamara Peterson, and Jeff Haanen; great-grandchildren: Erin (Josh) Biel, Whitney Haanen, Savanna Haanen, Kira Peterson, Tory Peterson, Dylan Haanen, Morgan Haanen, and Isaac Haanen; two great-great-grandchildren: Preston Biel and Ian Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; and six sisters.
