Jack Schaefer

Funeral services for Jack Schaefer, age 91, of Wilmot, SD will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. The Reverend Eldon DeBoer will officiate. The pianist will be Tara Anderson. Ken Cameron will be the vocalist. Jack died on Tuesday, December 22, at the Wilmot Care Center.
Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 1:00 p.m. Monday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. and will continue in the church Monday one before services. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Kristina Roberts, Andrea Hinman, and Amy Hanson. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, Scott Peterson, Tim Peterson, Jeremy Dahlen, John Dahlen, Benjamin Schaefer, and William Schaefer. Burial will be in Osceola #1 Cemetery at Marvin, SD.
Jack was born March 9, 1918 , at Hazelton, ND, to John and Lucy (Neiland) Schaefer.
At the age of five, Jack moved with his family to rural Wilmot where he attended grade school through the 8th Grade. He was united in marriage to Carol Christensen on June 20, 1941 in Canton, SD. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Summit and later moved to rural Marvin. In 1954, they moved to a farm near Twin Brooks. He spent his entire life farming raising crops, sheep, and cattle. After his retirement in 1991, he and his wife moved to Wilmot.
He was a very active member of the Marvin Baptist Church, serving as treasurer, Sunday School superintendent, and deacon. After moving to Wilmot, he became a member of the Zion Community Church, where he served as steward.
He enjoyed his hobbies of reading and woodworking making vases and furniture and many toys for his grandchildren.
Survivors include three children: Nancy Friesen and husband Russ, of Monticello, MN; Karen Peterson and husband Lloyd, of Cedar Falls, IA; Richard Schaefer and wife Susan, of Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren, Scott Peterson, Tim Peterson, Kristina Roberts, Jeremy Dahlen, John Dahlen, Andrea Hinman, Amy Hanson, Benjamin Schaefer, and William Schaefer; fifteen great grandchildren; one brother, Frank Schaefer, and wife Liz, Watertown, SD; one sister, Cora Smith, Broomfield, CO; one sister-in-law, Betty Ramsey of Milbank; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Howard and Mary Schaefer, and one brother, Willard Schaefer.
