Irvin Simon Adelman was born on April 27, 1932 to Andrew and Susan (Vonderhaar) Adelman in Yellowbank Township. Irvin attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Rosen, MN completing the 8th grade. Irvin married Veronica Scherer on June 12, 1962 in St. Joseph, MN. To this union, they were blessed with eight children: Barbara, Brenda, Steven, Stanley, Rosemary, Renee, Joann, and Janice.
Irvin and Veronica made their home on a farm near Rosen, MN raising registered Hampshire hogs for 40 years. They then later moved to their current location in Ortonville, MN. Irvin served on the Lac qui Parle County Extension Board for 28 years, the LqP County Soil and Water Conservation Board for 30 years, and the Bellingham School Board for 15 years. He was actively involved in the LqP County 4-H program. He was currently serving on the Big Stone County Soil and Water Conservation Board.
Irvin was also involved in his church community. He was a member of both St. Joseph’s and St. John’s parish councils. He served as Catholic Aid Association President for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over fifty years.
Irvin always felt his greatest accomplishment in life was his family and the time they spent together. He was blessed with a loving wife, eight children, 29 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Irvin died on March 4, 2009 in Sioux Falls, SD, at Avera Heart Hospital, having lived to reach the age of 76 years.
Irvin is survived by his wife, Veronica “Fronie” Adelman, of Ortonville; 7 children, Barbara (Scott) Knutson, of Minneota, MN, Brenda (Brian) Block of Milbank, SD, Stanley (Jill) Adelman of Bellingham, MN, Rosemary (Daniel) Vogl of Webster, SD, Renee (Wade) Marzahn of Groton, SD, Joann (Rodney) Fischer of Castlewood, SD, Janice (Thomas) Brandenburger of Madison, SD; daughter-in-law, Jackie Adelman of Apple Valley, MN; 2 brothers, James (Betty) Adelman of Rapid City, SD, Gerald (Dorothy) Adelman of Bellingham, MN; 4 sisters, Sr. Lucille Marie Adelman of Crookston, MN, Rose Ann Wollschlager of Revillo, SD, Irene (Roger) McCulloch of Big Stone City, SD, Verna Mae McGovern of Fargo, ND; 29 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
Irvin is preceded in death by his son, Steven Adelman; and his parents.
