Herbert Oscar Beyer of Graceville, MN, age 98, died on September 8, 2019, at Grace Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Graceville, with Pastor Eugene Andrus officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will be at Graceville Consolidated Cemetery with military honors.
Herbert Oscar Beyer was born on April 12, 1921, in Croke Township, Wheaton, MN. He was the son of Theodore and Francis (Laufer) Beyer. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school north of Wheaton until 8th grade. Herb worked on the family farm until he joined the U.S. Navy on November 24, 1942. He was proud to be a USS Leary survivor during WWII; the destroyer on which he was deployed sank in battle on December 24, 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Herbert worked for Swift Electric putting up REA poles from 1947 to 1953. On April 23, 1955, he was united in marriage with Gertrude Schmidt Hess. Together they were blessed with 49 years of marriage and two sons: Kenneth and Douglas. Herb farmed with his father-in-law from 1956 to 1960, and then farmed on his own until his retirement in 1985. Herb moved into the town of Graceville where he resided until the age of 96. He then he moved to Grace Home.
Herb was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Graceville. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served as Legion Post Commander for five years in Dumont, MN. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Herb loved to “pull people’s legs” and was known to be a bit of a prankster.
Herb is survived by his daughter-in-law, Beverly Hess of Tyler, MN; four grandchildren: Craig (Tifanie) Hess of Tyler, MN; Trent (Jackie) Hess of Tyler, MN; Jason (Tambi) Hess of Midland, TX; and Jeremy (Kirstin) Hess of Suhuarita, AZ; eleven great-grandchildren: Payton, Brooks, Braxton, Chole, Rylie, Tatum, Joseph, Sawyer, Aubrielle, Josselyn, and Brooklyn; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Theodore and Francis Beyer; wife, Gertrude Schmidt Hess Beyer; sons: Kenneth and Douglas Hess; and brothers: Leo, Marvin, Leonard, and Raymond Beyer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Graceville Senior Center, Grace Home, or American Legion.
