Herbert Mundt, age 84, of Sisseton, SD, passed away on December 16, 2022, at Avantara – Milbank Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Ortley City Cemetery.
Herbert Kay Mundt was born on June 14, 1938, in Day County, South Dakota. He was the son of Herbert H. and Beatrice (Hovland) Mundt. Herbert was nearly a lifelong resident of South Dakota. He grew up in Ortley and Sisseton, and he attended South Dakota State University for a couple of years.
In February of 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Germany. He was honorably discharged in April of 1962 and returned to Sisseton, SD. He very proud of his service.
Herbert lived in Nevada for a few years before moving back to Sisseton. He leased and operated the Blackhawk Lounge from the American Legion for many years. He tried his hand at farming for a short time, backgrounding feeder cattle. He followed in his father’s footsteps as the Roberts County Sheriff from 1967 to 1970.
Herbert was an avid golfer with a “scratch” handicap. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved hunting and fishing in his youth. He liked raising hell and chasing skirts with the Hellwig, Hull and Okerlund boys, and he was a skilled Blackjack player.
Herbert is survived by four sons: Kevin (Spring) Mundt of Henderson, NV; Michael (Wendy) Mundt of Las Vegas, NV; Mathew Mundt of Watertown, SD; Derek (fiancé Nikki) Mundt of Sioux Falls, SD; granddaughters: Kalia, Graycee, and Zarah; stepdaughter, Sarah (Shane) Haman and her children: Dylan, Kyler, and Arriana; step-granddaughter, Alex French and her children: Kalilah & Trenton; and a handful of nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Herbert H. and Beatrice Mundt; and his two beloved sisters: Sharon Cornelius and Roberta Johnson.
Herbert was a proud member of American Legion Otto-Quande-Renville Post #50 and VFW Post 3342 in Sisseton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests supporting one of Herbert’s military groups.
