Funeral services for Henry A. DeVaal, age 93, of Milbank, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Milbank. The Reverend Colleen Natalie-Lees will officiate. Henry died on Sunday, July 9, 2006, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The pianist will be Julie Ludwig and the soloists will be Rhianna Tuchscherer and Jeff Natalie-Lees. Family members are asked to meet in the fellowship hall behind the sanctuary by 1:30 p.m. Thursday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Thursday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Gerald, Jim, and Greg DeVaal; Larry and Roger Schaffer; and Dale Tuchscherer. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Henry was born on May 12, 1913, in Twin Brooks, SD, the son of John and Cornelia (Van Asch) DeVaal. He attended country school in Grant County, SD, through the eighth grade. Henry lived on the farm near Twin Brooks until the age of sixteen. He then moved with his family to a farm northeast of Milbank. Henry farmed with his brother Milton until his retirement in 1983. He then moved to Milbank. Henry married Marion Street on October 17, 1984. Marion died on May 20, 1997. He had lived in Park Place in Milbank since January of this year.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Grant County Senior Citizens in Milbank. Henry enjoyed playing cards and bowling.
Survivors include one brother, Stanley DeVaal, and wife Muriel, Rochester, MN; three sisters, May Olson, Cupertino, CA; Marie Tuchscherer and Agnes Van Dervoort, both of Milbank; many nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Ella DeVaal, Wilmot, SD; Cora DeVaal, Ortonville, MN; and Mary DeVaal, Milbank.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marion, three brothers, Cornelius, Peter, and Milton DeVaal, and two sisters, Virginia Regallo and Della Schaffer.
