Helen Theresa Vanderwal was born on April 16, 1928, to parents Leonard and Catherine Vanderwal in Graceville, MN, and grew up on a farm outside of Dumont, MN. She attended school in a one-room school house through the 8th grade and graduated from Graceville High School on May 31, 1945. While in the 7th grade, Helen was the Traverse County Spelling Bee Champion.
Following high school, Helen went to work for Griffith Implement as a bookkeeper. On June 11, 1953, Helen and Ralph Shuckhart were married at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. To this union six children were born. During her working years, Helen also worked for Cargill as a bookkeeper where she learned to operate a computer, one of her special achievements in life.
In her spare time, Helen enjoyed golfing, playing cards, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Helen also helped as a RSVP Volunteer and served her community by being on the cemetery board. Helen also treasured the time she spent with family and friends as well as her cats, and dog "Duke."
Helen passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2005, at the Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; and a son, Joseph.
Helen is survived by her children, Michael Shuckhart, Larry Shuckhart, Debra Burnes, Kathryn Meemken, and Julie Shuckhart; grandchildren, Jonathon Meemken, Michael Meemken, Shane Meemken, Jimmie Burnes, Brianna Burnes, Sarah Burnes, and Troy Henkel; two sisters, Mary Borden and Edna Ludowese; one brother Joe Vanderwal; as well as many other family and friends.
