Harold was the son of Ole and Alma (Johnson) Nowick. He was born at his parent's home in Bemis, SD, during a blizzard on January 22, 1937. The storm made it impossible for the doctor to travel from Clear Lake. He was delivered by his father and a neighbor woman. Harold joined his brother Alfred, and sisters, Olive and Margaret, in the family.
The family moved to South Shore where Harold attended school and graduated from South Shore High School. He was a natural athlete participating in football, basketball, and track. Harold was an avid baseball player. After high school, along with his South Shore teammates, he pitched many seasons in the Whetstone Valley Baseball League.
Harold married Marjorie Nelson of Stockholm on July 27, 1957, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in LaBolt. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past July. They had four children, Michael, Wayne, Nancee, and Timothy.
Harold began his working career at the Stockholm Creamery and then the South Shore Creamery where he had a milk route. In 1966 Harold began his telecommunications career when he was hired as the general manager of the Stockholm-Strandburg Telephone Company. He was responsible for maintaining the lines and his wife, Marjorie, operated the switchboard and ran the business office from their home. They operated the company for the next forty years transforming the company into a modern telecommunication firm providing voice, high-speed internet, and video services. The company provided service to the communities of LaBolt, Milbank, Revillo, South Shore, Stockholm, and Strandburg. They were active members of the South Dakota Telephone Association and South Dakota Network. The company merged with Interstate Telecommunications Cooperative of Clear Lake in February 2006.
Harold was an active member of Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg and strong in his faith. He was sexton of the cemetery for the last ten years.
Harold was an active member in the local community. He served on the volunteer fire department. Harold and Marjorie could be seen at many area sporting events, long after their children and grandchildren were grown, simply because they enjoyed high school athletics and wanted to support young people.
Harold and Marjorie liked to travel having visited much of the United States. They especially liked Hawaii and enjoyed the warm waters. They traveled twice to Norway visiting Harold's cousins. There were also builders, having built or remodeled five homes in Stockholm. Harold was a hunter. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, ducks, geese, deer and gophers with friends, his sons and grandsons.
Harold will be remembered most by his family, friends, and industry colleagues, for his sense of humor, fun and whistling. His grandchildren remember riding with him in the car, his tooting the horn, waving, and then asking the kids if they saw the little green man. He taught his grandsons how to flex their muscles and make them look bigger than anybody else's for their yearbook pictures by putting a finger under the bicep. He loved scaring anybody and everybody on Halloween. He loved to dress up as Santa Claus. He loved to swim with his kids.
It was important to Harold that his children and grandchildren know right from wrong, to be charitable, to study hard and to help and be kind to others. He had a big heart. He was devoted to his wife, Marjorie, and loved and had pride in his family. His love, generosity, and humor, will forever be present in our hearts and memories.
He faced his battle with cancer with determination, optimism, a sense of humor, and kind words for all who treated him.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Alma; his infant sister, Agnes, and his brother, Alfred.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, Stockholm; his sons, Michael of Edina, MN; Wayne and wife Susan, Twin Brooks, SD; and Timothy and special friend, Jodi Esterby, of Stockholm; his daughter, Nancee Roggenbuck and husband Michael, Puyallup, WA; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sisters, Olive Erickson and husband Roger, Kimball, NE, and Margaret Swenson and husband Melvin, Strandburg, SD, and their families; and cousins.
