Gertrude Schmidt was born September 10, 1913 in Johnson, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Matilda (Gunder) Schmidt. She grew up in Johnson and attended school there and at Collis, Minnesota. She worked for various farms in the Johnson, Dumont and Wheaton areas. Gertrude married Earl Hess at Graceville, Minnsota. They made their home in Big Stone City, South Dakota. Earl died in 1952. She moved to Graceville a year later and married Herbert Beyer April 23, 1955. They moved to the home farm at Collis and farmed until 1983. On May 13th of this year, Gertrude entered the Grace Home.
She enjoyed playing Smear, reading and embroidery.
Gertrude is survived by her husband, Herbert of Dumont; two sons, Douglas (Beverly) Hess of Tyler, MN and Kenneth Hess; one sister, Addie Taffe of Graceville; two brothers-in-law, Raymond (Joyce) Beyer of Texas, and Leonard (Mary) Beyer of Battle Lake, MN; four sisters-in-law, Joyce Beyer of Graceville, MN, Ella Schmitz of Wheaton, MN, Mary Roske of Herman, MN and Dorothy Harbeke of Page, ND; four grandchildren, Craig, Trent, Jason and Jeremy Hess; five great-grandchildren, Payton, Chloe, Rylie, Joe and Sawyer Hess; and by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Hess; three brothers, Gerald, Harold and Floyd; three sisters, Ellen, Florence and Helen; and by one granddaughter, Tamara Lynn Hess.
