Funeral services for Gene Burdick, age 92, of Ortonville, Minnesota, will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, Minnesota. Gene Victor Burdick was born Dec. 11, 1919, on a farm near Odessa to Wallace and Alta (Shrader) Burdick. In 1921 the family moved to another farm near Clinton where Gene grew up helping with the farm work and going to country school. In 1934 Gene's father sold the farm and they moved to Ortonville where he started a trucking business. Gene quit school at the age of 15 and washed cars for a local car dealer for $2.50 a week. He worked at this job six days a week, using the money he earned to help the family make ends meet. When Gene reached driving age he helped with the business, driving truck for his father.
The war with Japan and then Germany broke out in December of 1941 and Gene was called to duty in October of 1942. He served in the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific and was discharged in 1946, at which time he returned home and bought out his father's trucking business. Gene ran the business until his retirement in early 1990s.
Gene and Norma Jean Brown were united in marriage on November 8, 1947. Four children were born to this union. They celebrated their 64th anniversary in 2011.
Gene was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion Post 229. He faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels and Senior Meals and was a long standing active member of the First English Lutheran Church. Gene enjoyed his family and was always there for all of them.
Gene passed away at his home on Jan. 1, 2012, having reached the age of 92 years.
Gene's survivors include his wife Jean; daughters Linda Anderson of Miles City, Montana, and Karla and husband George VanLith of Mankato, Minnesota; sons Tim and wife Karen of Ortonville, and Tom and wife Debbie of Cambridge, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; sisters Velda Schoenrock of Stillman Valley, Illinois and Gen Davis of Ortonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
