Gary was born on June 3, 1941 in Graceville, MN to parents Leslie and Katherine (Piechowski) Gardner. Along with his two brothers, Wayne and Allen, he grew up in Browns Valley. As a child, he raised runt pigs with his close friend Wendy Duffield. After graduating high school, Gary joined the Army and served in Vietnam.
Gary farmed his entire life, growing both corn and wheat. He was known to be a great prankster and joker, often telling stories that would lure people in before realizing that he was teasing them. Even though Gary was extremely close to his mother, he also delighted in spinning yarns that she would believe. In his free time, Gary loved to go to Butch's Place and talk with his friends and the townspeople of Browns Valley. Gary also enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as snowmobiling during the winter.
Gary passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley, Minnesota.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents Leslie and Katherine Gardner and his younger brother Allen Gardner. Gary is survived by his older brother, Wayne (Barbara) Gardner of Normal, Illinois; sister-in-law, Clara Gardner of Knoxville, Illinois; two aunts, Isabel Piechowski of Graceville and Jean Benoken of Minneapolis, Minnesota; in addition to several nieces and nephews.
