Forrest Wayne Olson, 92, of Milbank passed away September 1, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Milbank.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. Rev. Mark Phillips and Rev. Dr. DeVern Schwenn will officiate.
Visitation will be Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be at the Milbank Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion, Birch-Miller Post #9 and the V.F.W. Grant County Post # 3486.
Casket bearers will be: Josh Zahn, Joey Hoveland, Richard Olson, Joe Olson, James Olson, and Robert Olson.
Forrest Wayne Olson was born September 11, 1918, in Barry, MN. He was the son of James Kenneth and Mabel C. (York) Olson. He attended rural school in Big Stone Township, MN. He moved with his family to the Clinton/Ortonville, MN area and lived on the family farm. He lived near Big Stone City, SD; then lived in Milbank, SD from 1934-1936.
Forrest served in the United States Army, enlisting on July 27, 1944, at Ft. Snelling, MN. He served overseas during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). Forrest was honorably discharged on August 16, 1946, at Ft. Lewis, WA.
Forrest returned to South Dakota. He farmed in Grant County with Oscar Fenner a few years, then farmed with his brother, Dyer Olson, until 1980. He was a truck driver for the Milbank Mercantile.He worked for a seed corn company in Dassel, MN during the winter months. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He enjoyed card games, dominos, and working the most difficult jig saw puzzles.
Forrest Olson is survived by seven nephews: Lee Anderson and George Anderson, both of Portland, Oregon; Richard (Carol) Olson and James Olson, all of Watertown, SD; Joe (Marla) Olson of Montrose, SD; Robert (Barb) Olson of Milbank, SD; and Daniel Olson of La Mirada, CA; 3 great-nephews; 2 great-nieces; 2 great-great nieces; and one great-great nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Dyer and Kenneth; one sister Helen Anderson.
