Eva Joann Larson was born on June 11, 1919 in Stanchfield, MN to parents Lewis and Anna (Gray) Larson. Growing up, Joann and her sisters Betty and Rose learned American Sign Language prior to learning to talk since their parents were deaf. Watching her parents struggle to live in a hearing world in the early days of the 20th century taught Joann to treat everyone she met with respect and compassion. Later in life, Joann and her sisters would continue to converse in sign language so that their children would not know what they were talking about. Upon graduating from high school, Joann went on for two years of LPN training.
On April 27, 1940, Joann was united in marriage to Lloyd Henry Schultz in Esterville, IA. To this union were born three children; Donna, Jerry and Jim. Joann and Lloyd farmed near Welcome and Trimont, MN before moving to Belgrade in 1957 where they farmed until retiring and moving to Brooten. They moved to Chokio in 1989. Joann and Lloyd celebrated fifty-eight loving years together prior his passing on February 26, 1998.
Joann was a very loving and nurturing mother, but never afraid to stand up for her children. When doctors told her to institutionalize her son, Jerry, who was born with cerebral palsy, she went out and found other doctors, speech and physical therapists and later found a school for handicapped children. Later, she fought to get Jerry a mentally stimulating job that was not so physically demanding. Many letters to senators and congressmen later, Hubert Humphrey assisted Joann in finding a suitable job in Mankato for Jerry. Joann raised her children to respect all those they met and to not judge them for they had not "walked a mile in their moccasins" as her favorite Native American proverb says. Joann was known for being spunky, and never afraid to tell someone what was on her mind. Her nurturing way continued on to her grandchildren where she always had time to sit and listen to them.
Joann was an excellent cook, making many healthy meals for her family. She excelled at cooking traditional Norwegian dishes which included lutefisk, lefsa, and chicken and dumplings. Joann also made delectable sugar cookies that she would them dip in coffee over conversations at home. She was wonderful seamstress, making many of her own clothes as well as clothing for her children. In her free time she enjoyed growing flowers and she was quite good at it.
Joann passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Anna; husband, Lloyd; and son, Jim.
