Esther Josephine (Johnson) Hanson was born on May 13, 1909, on a farm near Ortonville, MN, to parents, Hans Peter and Arvida Bernhardina (Paulson) Johnson. Esther was baptized into the Lutheran faith on November 29, 1909 in Ortonville, and was later confirmed on August 3, 1924, by Pastor Arnold Nelson in the Zion Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. As a young girl, Esther attended country school, district 33, near
Ortonville and later went on to Moorhead Teachers College in Moorhead, MN. After receiving her teaching certificate, Esther taught country school near Ortonville and Clinton, MN. Just before retirement, she renewed her teaching license and taught grade school in Hanover MN for 5 years.
On September 29, 1937, Esther married Kenneth Hanson at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. The couple made their home on a farm near Clinton, MN for 7 years. After living in Tracy, then Ortonville, Esther and Kenneth moved to Clinton in 1960 where she resided until just recently moving to Beverly Health Care Nursing Home in Milbank, SD. Esther enjoyed gardening and took pride in raising vegetables and flowers. She also treasured her church and the memories made with Ken during their traveling years. They visited every state in the Continental United States and even a trip to Sweden. Esther also enjoyed a quiet afternoon of fishing with family and friends. She will be truly missed.
Esther Passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2006, at the Beverly Health Care Nursing Home in Milbank, SD, reaching the age of 96 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Arvida; brother, Hjalmer Johnson; husband, Kenneth Hanson; and a nephew, Stewart Nelson.
Esther is survived by two sisters-in-law, Vera Hanson of Clinton, MN, and Marie Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; nephews, Don Nelson of Miltona, MN, Lynn Nelson of Minneapolis, MN, Dwayne Arnold of Lindstrom, MN, Byron Hanson of Minneapolis, MN, and Paul Hanson of Lino Lakes, MN; nieces, Lorraine Jorgenson of Wayne, PE, Suzanne Burke of Cannon Falls, MN, Sandara Ford of Fullerton, CA, and Sharlene Griebenow of Minneapolis, MN; as well as many great nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
