Funeral services for longtime Strandburg, SD, resident, Mrs. Esther Nelson Brugger, age 98, of Milbank, will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2007, at the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, SD. The Reverend Craig Werling of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank will officiate. Esther died on Monday, September 3, 2007, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The organist will be Kathy Granquist. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Thursday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Scott Hines, Scott Forster, Nathan Hines, Erik Nelson, Wayne Brugger, and Chad Eggebraaten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Tabor Lutheran Church, Strandburg, SD 57265.
Esther was born on February 24, 1909, in Grant County, rural Strandburg, SD, the daughter of John and Anna (Lundquist) Carlson. Esther attended country school near Strandburg and finished her junior year at Strandburg High School in 1925. She graduated from high school in Fargo, ND, in 1926. Esther went to Moorhead State Teacher's College, Moorhead, MN, where she obtained a one-year teacher certificate. She taught rural schools for five years-one year in Stockholm No. 3 and the rest in Troy No. 2. Esther was united in marriage to Arthur Nelson on July 24, 1931, in Strandburg. She helped with bookkeeping with husband Art's Standard Oil and Gas business. Her husband Art died on April 16, 1970. Esther married Walter E. Brugger on June 28, 1975, in Strandburg. Walter died on May 20, 1994. Esther continued to live in Strandburg until moving to Park Place in Milbank.
She was a lifelong member of Tabor Lutheran Church and was active in the Strandburg Senior Citizens. Esther bowled with her husband Walter in the Senior Citizens Bowling League. She was a past member and past president of the Red River Valley Synod Women's Group. Esther was a "Merit Mother of SD" in 1975 and was sponsored for that award by the Strandburg 4-H Club. She enjoyed scrap-booking, crocheting, and sewing quilts for her church.

LeMar Nelson, Blooming Prairie, MN; Dorothy Bennett and husband Norman, The Dalles, Oregon; Reverend Randy Nelson and wife Joy, Minneapolis, MN; and Paul Nelson and wife Sharon, Bradenton, FL; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; her sister, Rosalyn Trachy, Minneapolis, MN; four stepchildren: Bruce Brugger, Crete, NE; Wayne Brugger and wife Judy, Valrico, Florida; Georgene Eggebraaten and husband Gene, Crete, NE; and Donna Rae Pucket and husband Steve, North Platte, NE; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her parents, two husband, her sister, Ella Hedman, and one brother, Arvid Carlson, preceded Esther in death.
