Ervin Herrmann

Ervin Ernest Herrmann was born November 24, 1918 to parents Conrad and Barbara (Schmolzer) Herrmann near Barry, MN in Parnell Township. He was baptized and confirmed in White Rock, South Dakota.

Born and raised on a farm, Erv went to a county school near Wheaton until the eighth grade, when he went to work for farmers around the Wheaton and Beardsley areas, before joining the service.

At 17 years of age, Ervin went to a C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corp.) Camp in Columbia, South Dakota from April 1936 to March of 1937.

Ervin worked on farms in Minnesota and Iowa until he went into the Army 239th Signal Ordinance 44 Corp in February of 1941. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington until he went overseas on the Queen Mary, a trip that took 18 days. Ervin served in Africa, France, Italy, and Germany, as a Truck Driver Light 345 and a Rifle Marksman. Erv was discharged in Belgium in August of 1945. He received a Good Conduct Metal GO # 45 and Meritorious Service Plaque GO #58, HQ Company NAD 45.

On October 20, 1947, Ervin was united in marriage to Lamoine Ballhagen at Beardsley Methodist Church. They made their home and farmed for about 10 years near Clinton and Graceville, MN. From this union, they were blessed with two children: Darlene and Dewayne.

In February of 1959, they purchased a home in Big Stone City, SD, where Erv worked for the Big Stone Cheese Factory hauling milk in cans from 1958 to 1961. Ervin began working at the Cold Springs Granite Quarry near Milbank, SD, and continued his employment there until he retired in April of 1984. During his retirement, Ervin enjoyed fishing and working with wood.

Ervin has been a member of Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City and an active member of Big Stone Gertje Van Lith American Legion #229.

Ervin died on November 4, 2008, at Ortonville Area Health Services, having lived to reach the age of 89 years, just twenty days shy of his ninetieth birthday.

Ervin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lamoine; one daughter, Darlene (Marlin) Munson of Owassa, OK; one son, Dewayne (Nona) Herrmann of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren: Tyler (fiancee Stacey Walls) Munson of Owassa, OK, Alex Munson of Tulsa, OK, Kevin (Esther) Herrmann of Las Vegas, NV, and Karalena (Victor) Eastman of Las Vegas, NV; great-grandchildren: Craig and Leann Eastman of Las Vegas, NV; one sister Margaret Hoffard of Wahpeton, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ervin is preceded in death by his parents; and ten siblings: Martha Seibarndt, George Herrmann, Elsie Jorchumb, Carl Herrmann, Hazel Gibson, Pearl Arndt, Herman “Bud” Herrmann, Conrad Herrmann, Walter Herrmann, and Robert Herrmann.
