Ernie Grabow

Funeral services for former Grant County, SD, resident, Ernie Grabow, age 85, of Hot Springs, SD, will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2006, at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank. The Reverend DeVern Schwenn will officiate. Ernie died on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the State Veteran's Home in Hot Springs. The organist will be Sylvia Konstant. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. and in the funeral home Sunday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Grabow, Jr., Jerry Grabow, Earl Bohlen, Jr., Bill Bulygo, Wayne Grabow, and Harris Harms. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery with graveside military rites presented by the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9 and the Grant County VFW Post #3486, Milbank.
Ernie was born on March 11, 1921, in St. Paul, MN, the son of Gustav and Louisa (Liebe) Grabow. He spent his early life in Grant County, SD. Ernie attended Kilborn #5 country school. He then farmed with his father. Ernie was a veteran of WW II having served his country in the U.S. Army from October 21, 1942, until his honorable discharge on November 25, 1945. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. Ernie fought in battles and campaigns in New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon. During the battle for Luzon he spent many days in a foxhole with hand grenades and his gun fixed with a bayonet. Ernie received the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star.
He was united in marriage to Marion Hansen. They lived in Michigan and farmed for a time in the Twin Brooks, SD, area. At that time he was a member of the Twin Brooks United Brethren Church. His marriage to Nila Darling took place in Watertown, SD.
Ernie lived for a short time in Golden, CO. With failing health he entered the State Veteran's Home in Hot Springs on January 3, 1994. He was a life member of the VFW.
Survivors include three sons, Maynard and wife Loree and Milo and wife Brenda, all of Rapid City, SD, and Mark and wife Ann, Big Stone City, SD; five daughters, Marilyn Theye and husband Allen, Milbank, SD; Myrna Kauk and husband Vernon, Turpin, OK; Marjorie Wright and husband Roger and Mitzi Strasser and husband Royce, all of Summit, SD; and Rita Schliesman and husband Ron, Watertown, SD; sixteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Grabow, Sr., Milbank; one sister Helen Bohlen and husband Earl, Milbank; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rhea Grabow; one granddaughter, Aimee Sell; his parents, six brothers, and one sister.
