Elmer was born on July 25, 1912, at Twin Brooks, SD, the son of Martin and May (Stevens) Kruger. He lived with his parents on their farm in Kilborn Township near Twin Brooks along with one brother and five sisters.
He was united in marriage to Kathryn Begeman on September 13, 1936, at the rural Twin Brooks Zion Presbyterian Church parsonage in a double ring ceremony with his sister Violetta and Floyd Runge.
Elmer was actively engaged in farming in the Twin Brooks area until the age of seventy-five. His farming operation began with horses in 1935. In the mid-40's he and his brother bought a threshing machine and had a threshing run until the early 1950's when he gave in to the combine. Horses, however, remained his hobby, still breaking horses at age seventy-five. After retiring, he helped his grandson David on the farm.
He was a lifetime member of the Zion Presbyterian Church in Twin Brooks, church treasurer for fifty years, and a church elder for many years. He was dedicated to God and his family. He also served on the Whetstone Valley Electric Coop Board of Directors for several years. In January 2004 he moved to Meadow Lake Assisted Living in Watertown, SD. On October 10, 2006 he was transferred to the hospital in Watertown and then entered Jenkins Living Center where he lived for six days before his death.
