Graveside services for the cremated remains of Mrs. Elizabeth Jensen Herrick, age 88, of Falmouth, ME, and formerly of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2007, at the Milbank City Cemetery. The Reverend Beth Conrad of the Parkview United Methodist Church in Milbank will officiate. Elizabeth died on January 13, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME.
She was born on May 25, 1918, in Lansing, MI, the daughter of John Henry Jensen and Ruth (Hanaford) Jensen. She grew up in Aberdeen, SD, where her father was an acclaimed Professor of Chemistry at Northern State Teacher's College. Elizabeth graduated from Northern State where she met her husband-to-be, a student assistant to her father. After graduation, she became an elementary school teacher. She married Merlyn C. Herrick in Aberdeen on July 5, 1941, and became the mother of three children.
In 1952, Elizabeth and Merlyn moved their family from South Dakota to Bloomington, Ind., where Merlyn pursued his Doctoral Degree in Education at Indiana University, and Elizabeth taught in and became director of one of the country's first cooperative nursery schools. She was devoted to her family, and led both Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops, was president of PTA, and delighted in her children's educational achievements. When her children were grown, she moved with her husband to the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO.
Elizabeth was a deeply committed woman who achieved a high level of excellence in all that she did. Having been an accomplished seamstress and fiber artist, she pursued her interest in weaving, and especially admired the Indian weaving of the Southwest, traveling with her husband to study them many times. She delighted in wearing Merlyn's lapidary creations, often inspired by the Indian silver smithing seen during their travels in the Southwest. She was an avid gardener with a very green thumb, and with Merlyn, had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens at each of her homes. Although her three siblings settled all over the U.S., Elizabeth stayed in close contact with them, and took great pleasure in the family reunions they held.
She and Merlyn retired to John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, MO., in 1984, where Elizabeth became involved with the management and operation of the Gift Shops and the Thrift Shop. She cared for Merlyn throughout his years of cardiac problems, and was preceded in death by him on November 11, 2004, after sixty-three years of marriage.
After her husband's death, she came to live in the Portland, ME, area to be near her daughter. She first lived at Scarborough Terrace, and then at Sedgewood Commons.
Elizabeth is survived by her three children, David Charles of Cody, WY, with his wife Coralie and their sons, James Merlyn and Robert Bruce; Eileen Elizabeth of Parsonsfield, ME, with her husband Thomas W. Yoder, Jr., and their children, Bo Thomas and Kate Elizabeth; and Bruce Richard of Joshua Tree, CA, with his wife Sharon; her brother Richard Jensen and wife Joyce, Cody, WY; her sister Lucille Delap and husband Robert, Midland MI; nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Shirley Joachim, rural Corona, SD; and her brother-in-law, Arlo Herrick, Shalimar, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merlyn, brother John Jensen, and sister Ruth Loverude.
