As a young girl, Edell attended Long Island District 4 Country School near Clinton, MN, and then finished her education at the Clinton High School.

While finishing school, a young gentleman by the name of Verlin "Dobby" Duhr began working for her father, Karl. Edell and Dobby were married on January 31, 1939, in Elkader, IA.
