DuWayne H. Discher was born on November 26, 1935, in Fargo, ND, to parents, Herbert W. and Edna (Heinz) Discher. As a young boy he attended school in Leonard, ND, and graduated from Leonard High School in 1953. Following his graduation, DuWayne attended college at Moorhead State in Moorhead, MN, where he earned his Associate Degree. He moved to Clinton, MN, in the fall of 1955 to begin teaching at the Elementary School.
On August 24, 1957, DuWayne married Arla Mae Hagen at the Kindred Lutheran Church in Kindred, ND. The couple made their home in Clinton, MN, where they were blessed with three children, Tina, Terri, and Kari Jo. While still teaching, DuWayne attended classes at Moorhead State and earned his Bachelors Degree. He earned his Masters Degree in 1968, and took over the role of Principal for Clinton School and continued in this position until his retirement in 1993 from Clinton-Graceville School District.
Education was extremely important to DuWayne and he took great pride in being a lifetime member of the Minnesota Elementary School Principal Association and also a lifetime member of the Retired Educators Association of Minnesota. Naturally, he enjoyed being the Community Education Director for Clinton and surrounding areas by continuing to teach and touch the lives of others.
DuWayne was a member of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, Church Council, Commercial Club, Centennial Committee and very active in the Community Housing Association. During his retirement, DuWayne enjoyed collecting and restoring John Deere tractors. He also joined many area groups such as the Whetstone Valley Two Cylinder Club, the Olde Power & Machinery Club, and the Twin Brooks Threshing Club.
In his spare time, DuWayne enjoyed traveling with Arla Mae and especially taking their annual trip south. He loved to watch out his window and see all of nature's beauty. DuWayne treasured his family and friends and cherished many memories made with them throughout the years. He will be truly missed.
DuWayne passed away Thursday, December 7, 2006, at their home in Surprise, Arizona, reaching the age of 71 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Edna; one sister, Carol Petrich; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Olson, Inez White, Norma Perhus, Eileen Perhus, and Pauline Loberg; and two brothers-in-law Gene Perhus and Bob Loberg.
DuWayne is survived by his wife Arla Mae Discher of Clinton, MN; daughters, Tina (Dan) Nelson of Marshalltown, IA; Terri Discher of LaCrescent, MN; and Kari Jo (Brad) James of Vermillion, SD; grandchildren, Chad DuWayne Nelson, Curt Danny Nelson, Levi Wayne James, Ethan Eli James, and Kinsey Jo James; brothers-in-law, George Petrich, Orville Perhus, and Harland Olson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
