Dr. Norman Madsen

Dr. Norman Madsen, previously of Milbank, SD, age 93, died October 7, 2018, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services for Dr. Norman Madsen are scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home.   Rev. Russell McKee will officiate, and Jeannie Campbell will be the soloist.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at Milbank City Cemetery. Casket bearers will be: Adam White, Kyle White, Coral Bruce, Kirsten Krause, Kim McKee, Jennifer Hackney, Alex Meade, Christy Meade-Olivier, Sarah Conard, and Ian Madsen.  Honorary bearers are Gene Mann, James Wheeler, Catherine Murray, Bill Jones, Gerry Fields, George Smith, Ken Karels, and Ken Keller.

Military Honors: American Legion Birch-Miller Post #9, V.F.W. Grant County Post #3486, V.V.A. Northeast SD Chapter #1054, and D.A.V. Chapter #19.

Dr. Norman C. Madsen was born to Enoch and Marie (Paulsen) Madsen on May 13, 1925, in Hetland, SD.  In 1943, Dr. Madsen enlisted in the United States Navy and served in WWII.  After his discharge, he married the love of his life, Carol Hansen.  From this union, they had four daughters and one son.

He attended college and earned his Doctor of Dental Science Degree from Northwestern University, Chicago, IL.  The family lived in DeSmet, Brookings, and Chicago before settling down with his dental practice in Milbank, SD.  He and Carol resided in Milbank from Aug 13, 1951, until Oct 16, 2010, when they moved to Brandon, SD.   Dr. Madsen was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Dr. Madsen was involved with many organizations.  He was a charter member of Kiwanis, member and past Commander of the American Legion V.F.W., past President of the Milbank Country Club, 69-year member of the Masons, a Sioux Land Dental Study Club charter member, and one of the original members of the Whetstone Valley Nursing Home Board of Directors where he served for 20 years.

He served on the Milbank Board of Education from 1956 - 1982 and as the president from 1971 - 1982.  In 1978, he was named South Dakota Outstanding School Board Member.  Dr. Madsen was one of the founders of the Milbank Scholarship Foundation.

He loved to be outdoors.  He enjoyed playing golf, hunting and a good game of bridge.  More than anything, he loved spending time with his family.

Cherishing his memory are his children: Nancy Wheeler of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Caren (Butch) White of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ; Carla (Bob) Peterson of Newborn, GA; Mary (Keith) Meade of Salt Lake City, UT; and Chris Madsen of Watertown, SD; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death is his loving wife of 72 plus years, Carol; parents: Enoch and Marie Madsen; sister, Doris Nicholson; and grandchildren: Kirk, Elizabeth, and Laura Wheeler.
