Dorothy Wendland

Funeral services for Dorothy Wendland will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Pastor DeVern Schwenn will be officiating. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.

Dorothy May Benshoof was born in a sod shanty on a Claim in Perkins County to LeRoy and Nellie (Freestone) Benshoof on April 28, 1911. Dorothy attended country school in Yellow Medicine County, MN which was between Gary, SD and Canby, MN; where she finished 8th grade.

Dorothy went with her sister and brother-in-law to North Carolina, where she worked in a Cotton Mill from 1927-1929. Dorothy moved to Milbank in 1929 where she worked at the Hamburger Inn, where she met Harold E. Wendland, who was a salesman for the mercantile, the first week in September of 1929.

Dorothy and Harold were married March 8, 1930 in Clear Lake, SD. They lived in Milbank all of their 71 years of marriage. They had no children of their own, but since their marriage, scores of children have been welcomed into their home, including Dorothy's nieces and nephews. They moved from their home on 4th Street to Park Place in October of 1999.

Dorothy was a housewife, she co-chaired the surgical dressing project with Mrs. Gregory during the 2nd World War, and she was a member of the Central United Methodist Church where she was a faithful worker. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday school and Bible School from 1950-1960. Dorothy worked with Meals on Wheels from 1970-1983, where she was chairmen for four years. Dorothy was a charter member of the Grant County Historical Society, a member and past president of the Town and Country Garden Club, and a Regional and District Chairman of the South Dakota State Federation of Garden Club.

Dorothy is survived by her many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; sister Adeline Casten; and brothers: George, Guy, Lee, Walter, Oliver, Lewis, Vernon, Harry and Jim.
