Doris Lucille (Knoll) Folkens was born on November 20, 1914, in Odessa, MN, to parents William and Mabel (Lundgren) Knoll. As a young girl, she was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith on June 8, 1930, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Odessa, MN. Doris graduated from Ortonville High School in 1933, after graduating, she attended teachers training. Doris taught country school in a one room school house near Luverne, MN, and also near Clinton, MN.
On November 6, 1941, Doris married Jay Folkens at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Johnson, MN. Together the couple made their home on a farm near Clinton, MN, where they were blessed with two children, Darryl and Jeanette. The couple worked together on the farm until their retirement in 1986. The couple then moved to Clinton, MN, for a number of years before moving to Prairieview Independent Living in Wheaton in 2004 and finally Fairway View Assisted Living in Ortonville, MN, in 2006.
Doris was a simple woman who enjoyed farm life. She took pleasure in cooking, canning, and baking, (most memorable were her peach pie or waffles with her special homemade syrup!). There was always plenty of food on the table when extra farm help were to be fed. When not cooking, Doris tended to her vegetable garden, flower gardens, orchard, and rhubarb patch. She was a very active member of the Bethany Lutheran Church donating her time to the Ladies Aid group, serving many years as Sunday School teacher and as Sunday School Superintendent. Doris also served several years as Secretary and Treasurer for the local AAL Branch. In her spare time, Doris and Jay enjoyed going dancing and playing cards with family and friends. She also enjoyed her turtle figurines collection which continued to grow over the years. Doris was a special lady who will be missed by those that loved her and called her friend.
Doris passed away Saturday, May 5, 2007, at the North Ridge Residence Nursing Home in Ortonville, MN, reaching the age of 92 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mabel; two brothers, Billy and Robert; two sisters, Vetta Olson and Francis Sackreiter; and a son-in-law, Gary Omura.
Doris is survived by her husband, Jay Folkens of Ortonville, MN; son, Darryl (Pam) Folkens of Roseville, MN; daughter, Jeanette Omura of Maui, HI; four grandchildren, Desiree Omura, Jayson Omura, Paul Folkens, and Jill (Ben) Schmitt; two great grandchildren, Mikayla Flores and Jordynn Omura; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
