Dorathy Marie (Graumann) Martens was born in Beardsley, MN. to parents Herman and Louise (Weber) Graumann on March 8, 1925. She was baptized March 20, 1925, and was confirmed August 1, 1937. She lived in Beardsley until she was 5, when the family moved to a farm south of Beardsley in 1930. She attended school through 8th grade at Golden Prairie School. She enjoyed baking and clothing projects in 4-H and helping on the farm taking care of nieces and nephews. She graduated from Beardsley High School in 1943.
In 1944, she enrolled in the Cadet Nurses Training program, where she studied at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, and in hospitals at Webster, S.D., Watertown, S.D., and Minneapolis, MN. She finished her training at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. in the summer of 1947.
On November 16, 1947, Dorathy married Clarence John Martens in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Beardsley, MN. They were blessed with five children, Judy, Betty, Faye, Dan, and Rick. The couple made their homes on various farms in Foster and Browns Valley townships before settling on the Martens homestead in 1966. Her family thrived on the food produced in her garden, and she was also actively involved in the dairy operation on the farm.
She loved nursing and used those skills extensively in her home while raising her family. In 1975, after her children were grown, she put her skills and compassion to loving use at Grace Home in Graceville for 10 years.
She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran church. Her faith and love for Jesus was a strong focus and she loved to serve God by teaching Sunday School, release time classes, and being involved in Study Club, and the Ladies aide.
In 2006, she moved to Grace Home in Graceville, where she enjoyed socializing with other residents, and partaking in activities such as bingo, embroidery, dancing, singing, playing cards, and arts and crafts. She especially enjoyed learning how to paint with watercolors while there, and she looked forward to times when family would gather and provide music (especially hymns) on various musical instruments.
Dorathy survived various bouts with cancer over several years, but her recent diagnosis in March could not be overcome. Recently, she had surgery at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, where she received wonderful care. She returned to Grace Home on June 1, and went to her heavenly home on the morning of June 2, 2010, at the age of 85.
