Donald Milo Peterson was born March 15, 1930, to Martin and Oneva Peterson at the family farm near Canton, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Canton High School. Don was married to Bonnie Burrell on May 22, 1949. They farmed near Canton for three years before moving to a farm near Sherman, South Dakota, where they raised four sons. Don left farming in 1969 and became the 1st Territory Sales Manager for Shivvers Grain Drying Systems. Don's territory was everything west of the Mississippi River. In 1977, Don started Peterson Grain Handling Systems and traveled the Dakotas and southern Manitoba in Canada. In 1979, they moved to Milbank (Big Stone Lake) and built Peterson Grain Handling on the south edge of Milbank.

On April 13, 1990, Don and Dolores (Dolly) Kasuske were married in Milbank. Don left the grain handling business and he and Dolly started Double "D" Designs, a collectable Buckle and Toy business. Their first major contract was with the state of South Dakota to design and distribute all of the Buckles for the State Centennial. They went on to design Buckles for Centennials and special events for many towns in both the Dakotas and Canada. Don was still active in the business until his death. Don's success in business was due to his firm belief in honesty above all else.

Don is survived by his wife Dolly of Milbank, SD; brother Omar Peterson of Canton, SD; four sons: Mike (Vicki) Peterson of Pierre SD; Dan (Karen) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD; Tim Peterson of Elk River, MN; and Kevin (Vicki) Peterson of Watertown, SD; three step children: Randy (Denise) Kasuske of Twin Brooks, SD; Ricky Kasuske of Corona, SD; and Patricia (Dale) Rowland of Blakesburg, IA; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren ; brother-in-law Orlando (Maggie) Peterson of Worthington, MN; and sister-in-law Nancy Bertrum of Worthington, MN.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Oneva.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the National Parkinson Foundation are preferred.
