Donald Wayne Kohl, son of William Carl Kohl and Evelyn Vargus Cooper, was born on August 29, 1944 in the West Central Minnesota Hospital in Graceville, MN. He was baptized on November 12, 1944, in the Bethany Lutheran Church by Rev. E. J. Zehms. He was confirmed in the same church on June 30, 1957, by Rev. H. A. Mutterer.
Donald grew up on a farm east of Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School on May 31, 1962. He married Zelda LaVan Anderson on August 24, 1963 at Eidskog Lutheran Church. They were blessed to have three children.
Donald lived in Ortonville from 1962 to 1970, at which time the family moved to the lake house. He worked for the Farmers' Union, Vince Stegner, and Goodyear. Then he formed a business partnership with Kent Stotesbury and they opened D & K Tire Service. In 1999 they sold the business. Donald was then employed by the Clinton Ag Service for a couple of years until health problems forced him into early retirement in 2003.
Donald's love was his family and he relished time spent with his children and especially his grandchildren. He liked to reminisce with friends. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, playing cards and dice games, 2 days of mowing the lawn – at home and at the Herbergs where he always made sure the rabbits had plenty of food and water, playing computer solitaire, and an occasional trip to the casino. Important in Donald's life were his beloved trips to Canada with his family to go fishing. He was also the Grill Master! (Daddy-O-of-the-Patio)
Donald passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at his home. He had lived to reach the age of 67 years.
Donald is survived by his wife, Zelda; his children, Scott (Tammy) Kohl of Maple Grove, MN; Brock (Leandra) Kohl of Southside, TN; Donnette (Jeff) Herberg of Beardsley, MN; eight grandchildren – Heather, Brandon, Brittany, Erika, Caitlyn, Bryce, Birkley, and Brennen; two great grandchildren – Gavin and Madelyn; his sister, Verna (Tom) Schlimme of Clinton, MN; and his brother, David (Mona) Kohl of Sartell, MN; brother-in-law Orvin Anderson of Ortonville, MN; and sister-in-law Elaine Thielke of Circle Pines, MN.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert and Allen; his sister, Genevieve Morton; mother and father-in-law, Adolph and Eva Anderson; brother and sister-in-law Jimmie and Marlene Anderson; brother-in-law Floris Thielke; and his sister-in-law Adeline Kohl.
