Don was born on March 11, 1920, in Stockholm, South Dakota, to Christian and Gelia (Johnson) Hansen. He grew up on the family farm during the Dust Bowl and Depression era of the 20's and 30's.
Don graduated from South Dakota State University in 1942, with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Dairy Science. He enlisted in the US Naval Flight Training program and served as a flight instructor during WWII. He later joined the Navy Reserve, retiring in 1968. On August 4, 1943, Don and Joy Smith were united in marriage in Watertown, South Dakota.
After the war, Don owned and operated a small dairy plant in Minnesota before joining Ford Tractor in Michigan.
Don was a long time member of United Methodist Congregations and actively participated in their youth programs, work projects, church administration, building programs and always sang in the choir.
Don was particularly interested in travel and the cultures he encountered. Following his retirement, he and Joy spent seven years motor homing across North America before settling in Murrieta, California. During the course of their travels, he and Joy visited all 50 states, much of Europe, China, Russia, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. In 2005, they moved to Patriot's Colony at Williamsburg, Virginia.
Cherishing his memory are his wife of 68 years, Joy (Smith) Hansen, and his son, Douglas (Helen) Hansen, all of Williamsburg, Virginia; his grandson, Eric (Shelby) Hansen and their children, Samantha, Rylie, and Sawyer of Austin, Texas; his granddaughter, Kathryn (Greg) Eden, and their children Joseph, Tobey, and Lucas of San Carlos, California; numerous nieces and nephews; and seven American Field Service and foster children who graduated from high school while living with the Hansens.
