A Memorial Mass for Denny Ward, age 74, of Milbank, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6th, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate. There will be no visitation. Music will be presented by Nancy Johnson, organist; Larry Tietjen, soloist; and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir. Mr. Ward died on Friday, July 2nd, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Tuesday to attend services. There will be a Wake Service at the church on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be the ladies of Angela Hall in Milbank. The urn bearer will be his wife, Vi. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery near Revillo with graveside military rites presented by members of the Grant County VFW Post #3486, the Birch-Miller American Legion #9, and the Stockholm-Strandburg American Legion Post #171.
Denny was born in Revillo, SD, to John and Thina (Tennyson) Ward.
He graduated from Revillo High School in 1953.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from November 3, 1955, until August 5, 1957.
Denny married Viola J. Reiners on February 7, 1959, at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Revillo. Following marriage, they made their home in Los Angeles, CA, from 1960-61; Huron, SD, from 1962-66; and then in Milbank.
He worked for Flanery Sausage Company in Huron, SD, until 1966. When they moved to Milbank, he continued to work for the Flanery Sausage Company from 1966-69. He worked with his father-in-law, Dick Reiners, in R and W Plumbing from 1970-1973. Denny then purchased the business which became Ward Plumbing, Heating, and Excavating. In 1983, he sold the business. Denny first drove truck for Bracht Transportation Company, then for Hedge and Herberg, and lastly for Henrich Concrete Plant, from 1984 until his retirement in 2000.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.
Denny lived for his grandchildren. He was a kind and considerate man who was always a gentleman.
Survivors include his wife Viola (Vi), of Milbank; five children: Tim and Jeanne Ward, Corrine, John, and Sarah, Milbank; Tom and Christy Ward, Emma and Ian, Sioux Falls; Jeff and Lisa (Ward) Heiser, Matt (Panama City, FL), Aaron, Tyler, and Lucas, Aberdeen, SD; Ron and Gail (Ward) Schwandt, Jenifer, Spencer, and Jacob, Liberty, MO; and Rob and Michelle (Ward) Andresen, Rachel and Reilly, Sioux Falls; one brother, Pat Ward and wife Kay, Clark, SD; two sisters: June Freese and husband Fred, Bloomington, MN, and Marian Kelzer, and husband Gene, Rochester, MN; one sister-in-law, Grace (Lorenz) Ward, Cavour, SD; and cousins.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Joyce Ward, and one brother, Roger Ward.
