Funeral services for former Milbank, SD, resident, Denise Lynn Baker, age 56, of Goshen, IN, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5th, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverend Jason Schulz will officiate. The organist will be Gloria Hanson. Denise died on Saturday, February 27th, at the Avalon Village Care Center in Ligonier, IN.
There will be a public visitation at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be her brothers, Ray and Jerry Hawkinson; her nephew, Raymond Martin; her friend, Steve Underwood; and her grandchildren, Christopher Baker and Chantel Baker. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.
Denise was born on May 7, 1953, in Milbank, SD, to Earl and Marilyn (Miller) Hawkinson. She attended South Shore High School in South Shore, SD.
On June 29, 1972, she married Bernie Ray Baker, Sr., in Warrington, NC. The couple resided in the Ortonville-Marietta, MN, area, following marriage. Denise lived in Canby, MN, from 1983-88, and in Willmar, MN, from 1989-1991. During the 1970's and early 1980's Denise worked for her father Earl in Hawkeye Enterprises. She had lived in the Milbank area since 1991. She fought a lifelong and courageous battle with cancer. Denise was also the primary caregiver for her grandson, Christopher Baker, when her son Bernie was a single parent. As her health began to fail, she lived on and off with her daughter Mary so that Mary could take care of her.
She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Milbank. Denise loved her Savior and her family and friends dearly.
Denise is survived by five children: Bernie Baker and wife Missy, Lakeville, MN; Barbara Greiner, Aberdeen, SD; Becky Baker, Watertown, SD; Mary Sieh and husband Chris, Goshen, IN, and Brandy Baker, Watertown, SD; her mother, Marilyn Hawkinson, Milbank, SD; eleven grandchildren: Christopher Baker, Brianna Greiner, Bethany Greiner, Chantel Baker, Danielle Kasuske, Christian, Matthew, Hannah, Abby and Isaiah Sieh, and Jacoby Baker; six brothers and sisters, Ray Hawkinson and wife Michele, Cokato, MN; Jerry Hawkinson and wife Sheila, Wichita Falls, TX; DeAnna Schindele and husband Norb, Dassel, MN; David Hawkinson, Watertown, SD; Tony Hawkinson and wife Margaret, Isle of Lewis, Scotland, United Kingdom; and Carol Monnens and husband David, Milbank, SD; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Hawkinson; one brother, Earl Hawkinson, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Sophia Margaret Baker; and several cousins, aunts, and uncles.
