Darwood "Woody" Donivon Sellin, son of William B. and Sybil (Holman) Sellin, was born in Yellow Bank Township, Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota, on November 13, 1928. He was baptized August 1, 1929, at Yellow Bank Evangelical Church, rural Odessa, MN.
Woody attended school in Odessa and graduated from Ortonville High School. On May 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Janis Samuelson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton, MN.
Woody was a member of Battery "C" of the 175th Field Artillery Battalion 47th Division of the Minnesota National Guard, which was activated for duty during the Korean War. He served in the military from January, 1951 to October,1952 in Camp Rucker, Alabama. Woody returned to Ortonville and was soon employed by Ottertail Power Company in Ortonville, MN, and later Wahpeton, ND. He retired in 1990 from the power plane in Big Stone City, SD, with 33 years of service.
Woody and Janis made it a priority to take their three children on annual vacations. Together they enjoyed oceans, mountains, and zoos. After retirement, the couple also made several trips to Acapulco, Mexico.
In 1991, Woody and Janis attended "Clown Camp" at the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse, and became the clown tea of "Clem and Annie." They made appearances in parades, fairs, and other functions. As members of the World Clown Association, they attended a convention at Southport, England, and cruised the Caribbean Islands and Alaska. They met clowns from all over the world, including South Africa and Russia.
Woody was an active member of First English Lutheran Church and served on the church council and as an usher. As a life member of the American Legion, Wood was actively involved for over 50 years. He served as Commander of the Spink Dobak Post, Big Stone County Commander, and was later a member of the Gertje Van Lith Post. He also served his community in many ways. Most notably, Woody was a firefighter with the Ortonville Fire Department for 26 years, and was a member of the Police Commission, and the Zoning and Planning Board.
Woody passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at the Northridge Residence Nursing Home in Ortonville, MN, reaching the age of 77 years. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Warren; granddaughter, Amanda Ann Sellin; daughter-in-law, Brenda (Schwarze) Sellin; and a brother-in-law, Eugene McManus.
Woody is survived by his wife, Janis; son Bill Sellin; daughter, Juli (Rod) Morris; son, Brad (Ronda) Sellin; six grandchildren, Brian (Candice) Sellin; Dan (fiancA�A� Velvet Schaefer); Ben (friend Emily Lohmeyer); Katie Morris; Jessica Sellin; Jeremy Sellin; sisters, Lorrayne McManus and Beverly (Duane) Warner; as well as many other family and friends.
