Mundwiler and Larson Funeral Home of Ortonville announce the death of Darlene Schroeder of Big Stone City, SD. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. at Mundwiler and Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville, with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Monday morning. Reverend Dennis O'Neill will officiate. Pat Kunz will be the organist. Casket bearers will be Mark Schroeder, Nicholas Schroeder, Bryan Biever, Brent Hasslen, and Jade Hasslen. Burial will be in Green wood Cemetery in Big Stone City, SD.
Darlene Anne Schroeder was born on May 5, 1941, in St. James, MN, to Albert and Irma (Firchau) Krueger. Darlene's younger years were spent in St. James, MN. During her sophomore year of high school her family moved to Beardsley, MN. Darlene graduated from Beardsley High School, after which she moved to Fargo, ND, and began working at Woolworth's.
On March 18, 1961, Darlene was joined in marriage to Lee Schroeder in Beardsley. To this union three children were born. They lived in Watertown, SD, the first ten years of their marriage and then made their home in Big Stone City, SD. Darlene was employed at Big Stone Canning Factory, Electric Maid Bakery, The Grocery Basket in Big Stone City, as a cook at the Big Stone City School, and was currently working at McDaddy's in Big Stone City.
Darlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, Chautauqua Concerts, Twins baseball, and flowers. She cherished sharing a cup of coffee with friends and Girl's Night Out. Most important was the time Darlene spent with her family, especially her grandchildren— whether it was a game of Crazy 8 or yelling at the refs at one of the high school basketball games.
Darlene died on April 30, 2013, in her home, having reached the age of 71 years.
Left with her loving memory are her children: Mark Schroeder of Quartz Hill, CA; Kimberly (Brent) Hasslen of Ortonville, MN; and Jody (Bryan) Biever of Big Stone City, SD; five grandchildren: Nicholas Schroeder, Jade Hasslen, Hope Hasslen, Tyra Biever, and Bo Biever; and her brothers: Ervin (Jean) Firchau of Graceville, MN; Donald Firchau of Maynard, MN; and Richard (Jeanne) Krueger of Clinton, MN.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Irma and Albert; spouse, Lee; daughter-in-law, Rickie; and granddaughter, Rhea.
