Daniel Hanson, Sr., age 93, of Wilmot, died May 14, 2015.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmot. Visitation will be at the church Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Rev. Caleb Schewe will officiate.
Music will be provided by Joyce Hanson, Sharlene Orcutt, Larry Tietjen, and the Hanson children. Casket bearers will be Darin Mertens, Troy Hanson, Jerry Bury, Jeff Hanson, Paul Orcutt, and Cory Hanson. Honorary bearers will be Daniel's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Burial with military honors will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.
Daniel Roy Hanson, Sr. was born on January 15, 1922, in Kilborn Township, Grant County, South Dakota to William and Emma (Kunde) Hanson. He graduated from Wilmot High School in 1940. Daniel served in the Signal Corp during WWII from September 8, 1942 until his honorable discharge on November 8, 1945. On September 11, 1942, Daniel was united in marriage to Elsie Bohlen in Madison, Minnesota. To this union six children were born.
Daniel was a farmer and also sold seed corn. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., and was active in Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wilmot. Hobbies included hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He also had a 6, 000 piece pen collection! He and Elsie were fond of traveling and spent memorable trips to Branson, Nashville, Yellow Stone, Canada, Ohio, and Devil's Tower. As a faithful man, it was important to Daniel to be a good neighbor and treat everyone with respect. He was proud of his family and cherished the time they spent together.
Daniel died on May 14, 2015, at the Milbank Area Hospital – Avera Health, having reached the age of 93.
Cherishing his memory are his wife Elsie, of Wilmot; children: Daniel (Joyce) Hanson, Jr. of Wilmot, SD; David (Ronda) Hanson of Corona, SD; Delton (Karen) Hanson of Wilmot, SD; Delvin (Nancy) Hanson of Wilmot, SD; Dianne (Tom) Stoick of Milbank, SD; Darlene (Jim) Mertens of Milbank, SD; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter Emily Hanson; six brothers: Elmer Hanson, Alfred Hanson, John Hanson, Willard Hanson, Floyd Hanson, and Alvin Hanson; and three sisters: Martha Shreve, Lena Roll, and Margaret Claussen.
