Dale 'Dean' Johnson, age 69, died early Tuesday morning, January 22, 2008, at the Ortonville Hospital in Ortonville, MN.
Dean was born August 11, 1938 in Ocheyedan, IA., to Genevieve and Nels Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Dean attended school through the 9th grade in Sioux Falls, SD. He worked at the Bowling Alley, setting pins and bowled in several tournaments, winning many trophies. Dean then moved to Round Lake, MN., where he worked as a butcher at the Round Lake locker plant during high school. He graduated from High School on May 28, 1958. Dean was a member of the National Guards Reserve out of Worthington, MN. Dean moved to Tyler, MN on May 29, 1958 and started working as a meat cutter at Eddie's Super Valu in Tyler.
Dean married Marion Jensen on October 11, 1959 at the Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, MN. Three children were born to this union; Curtis, Dennis and Susan.
Dean purchased Murphy Freight lines in Tyler, MN, and drove a truck from 1960-1964. He then worked as a meat cutter at the Red Owl in Slayton, MN, until he moved to Ortonville in November. of 1965 at which time he began working at the Red Owl in Ortonville. Dean continued to work for Red Owl for nine years until he purchased half ownership of the Pioneer Locker Plant in Ortonville, MN. He worked as a butcher/meat cutter until February 1982 when health problems caused him to retire. Dean also owned DJ's bait in Ortonville until his health forced him to retire completely.
Dean was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life and won several archery tournament trophies. He was a member of the archery club, Jaycees, the bowling league, and played softball for Red Owl.
Dean will be missed dearly by his family and friends, and especially by his constant companion, 'Little Girl', a little white poodle, whom Dean rescued 15 years ago from the Refuge. 'Little Girl' went everywhere Dean went, and will surely notice this loss.
Dean Johnson is survived by his wife, step-mother, Luverne Johnson of Mankato, MN; two sons, Curtis of Ortonville, Dennis of Hutchinson, MN; daughter, Susan (Mark) Falk, of Grand Marais, MN; five grandchildren, Seth, Sasha and Sarissa Falk, and Hunter and Parker Johnson.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
