Clifford Thomas Hanson was born on December 14, 1902, in Perry Township, Lac Qui Parle County, MN, to parents, Louis and Jennie (Haugen) Hanson. He was baptized on April 10, 1936, at the Zion Evangelical Church in Bellingham, MN. Throughout his life, he was a member there and also at the Yellowbank and Odessa Evangelical Churches. As a young boy, Clifford attended District 42 Country School in Lac Qui Parle County. After his father's accidental death, Clifford assumed a lot of the responsibilities of the work on their family farm. As a young man, he also took a position with the county grading and plowing the roads with a team of horses.
On October 10, 1935, after a two year courtship, Clifford was united in marriage to Lizzie Ninneman of rural Lac Qui Parle County. They were blessed with three daughters, Eileen, Virginia, and Carlene. They made their home with Clifford's brother Alton and his wife, Lizzie's sister, Bertha. Together the couples worked with one another on the farm and raised their families. After fifty-seven years, the two couples sold their farm and retired to a home in Ortonville. Cliff and Alton were the best of friends. They enjoyed working with each other and treasured the quiet time spent watching the sun set.
In his spare time, Clifford liked doing woodworking, and with the help of Alton, Bertha, and Lizzie, made clocks, rocking horses, stage coaches, benches, and trunks for family and sometimes friends. Cliff also liked to watch the birds and of course enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a tender hearted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, who lived out his faith and put the needs of his family before his own.
After the deaths of Bertha and Alton, Clifford and Lizzie continued to live in their home until this past May when they moved to Northridge Residence in Ortonville. Clifford treasured his independence and fought to keep it as long as he was able to do so. He passed away quietly in his sleep early August 10, 2006, having reached the age of 103 years, 7 months, and 27 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Jennie; special brother and sister-in-law, Alton and Bertha Hanson; brothers, Russell Hanson and Wendell Hanson; sisters, Ethel Hunter, Luella Ninneman; two infant sisters, Myrtle and Lucie; one great grandson, Zachary Williams; two sons-in-law, Delmar Thole and Thomas Wittnebel.
Clifford is survived by his wife, Lizzie; three daughters, Eileen (Dale) Williams, Virginia (Glenn) Kuechenmeister, and Carlene Wittnebel; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one nephew, Dean (Beverly) Hanson; nieces, Wanda Koepke, Debbie (Steve) Steuart; children of Alton and Bertha Hanson; brother-in-law, Elmer (Sue) Ninneman; sisters-in-law, Lillian Ninneman, Joyce Ninneman, and Anita (Jerry) Kniefel; as well as many more nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Blessed be his memory.
