Memorial services for Clela McFarland, age 85, Ortonville Minnesota, will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 25 at the United Methodist Church in Ortonville with Pastor Kathy Marker officiating. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. McFarland died on Monday, February 20 2006 in the Ortonville hospital. The organist will be Janet Hipple and the soloist will be Don Prior. Burial of her cremains will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. Immediately following the memorial service, there will be refreshments and fellowship at the church.
Clela was born on January 14, 1921, at the Hay family home by Big Stone City, South Dakota, to Clayton and Josephine (Henkels) Hay. She graduated from Big Stone City High School. She married Donald McFarland on September 22, 1941, in Milbank, South Dakota. During World War II, they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where Don worked on war related projects for Magnavox. After the war, the couple moved to Moorhead, Minnesota. They moved to Big Stone City in 1986.
She was an active participant in both business and community work. For years she managed a record store, Bernie's Records in Fargo, North Dakota, which was owned by her and her husband. During this work, she met and befriended a local teenager who went on to become pop star Bobby Vee. Following the sales of the record store, under contract from Bobby Vee's Hollywood agent, she became the manager of his National and International fan clubs, a position she held for a number of years.
She was an avid square dancer, and was very active in her church and her Sewing Circle Club. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ortonville.
Survivors include her son Wayne and his wife Gloria, Valencia, CA; her sister Doris Scoblic, and her brother Derald Hay and his wife Margaret, Big Stone City, SD; and a large extended family in Minnesota and South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, and three brothers.
