Clayton Flattum

December 28, 1931 — February 1, 2015

Clayton Flattum, age 83 of Clinton, MN died February 1, 2015, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton. Rev. Bev McNeill will officiate and burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery, with military honors.

Visitation will be at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service. Casket bearers will be: Jerry Stattleman, Doug Stattelman, Eric Torgeson, Cal Lillehaug, Dale Martig, and David Alberts.

Clayton Elroy Flattum was born on December 28, 1931, in Webster, SD. He was the son of Martin and Anna (Peterson) Flattum. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith. At age ten, Clayton moved with his family to Clinton. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and graduated from Clinton High School in 1950, where he was a star basketball player. He entered the United States Army and served in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star, The United Nations Service Medal, and a Merit Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged on January 29, 1953.

Clayton returned to Minnesota and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and later for the Burlington Northern Railroad as a section foreman.

Clayton was united in marriage with Dorothy (Skoog) Anderson on December 27, 1971. They made their home in Clinton. Clayton played basketball on the town team and also played pool for The Penguin Bar team. The teams won many trophies and Clayton won many individual trophies.

Clayton moved to the Clinton Care Center in 2000, as his health continued to decline.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Ortonville, MN; his brother and sister-in-law, Merle and Mary Jo Flattum of San Diego, CA; his step-daughters: Barbara Brakefield and Elizabeth Anderson; nephews: David Flattum; John Flattum, Jim Flattum; and niece, Julie Flattum.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Gordon and Gerald.
