A
memorial mass for Miss Claire L. O'Sullivan, age 89, of St. William's Care
Center in Milbank will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at
St. William's Chapel in Milbank. Father Dan Wolfgram will be the celebrant. Claire died on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at St. William's Care Center. There will be no visitation. It was Claire's wish
that her physical remains be donated to the University of South Dakota School
of Medicine in Vermillion, SD, for anatomical study. Following that, her cremated remains will be
buried with her parents in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL. The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank is in
charge of the arrangements.
Claire
was born on October 25, 1919, in Dublin,
Ireland, the daughter of Stephen and Lillian (Ross)
O'Sullivan. Claire's mother died shortly after her birth and her father married
Rosalie Daly.
She
completed the seventh grade and did obtain several certificates in bookkeeping,
typing, and shorthand from Loretta College in Dublin just prior to WW II. Claire then worked in a factory
in Chicago prior to attending St. Mary's in Chicago. She spent the past sixty years living with and
volunteering for the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence in various places
including, St. Mary's (Chicago), Mt. St. Joseph (Lake Zurich, IL) and the Lewis
School for boys (Michigan).
She
came to Angela Hall in Milbank on June 20, 1986, where she resided until 1993. Claire then moved to
an apartment in Middlebrook
Circle where
she lived independently until February 24, 1994. Claire then returned to Angela Hall where she lived
until she entered St. William's Care Center. She ran the gift shop at St. Bernard's Hospital in
Milbank which became the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health.
Claire
is survived by nine nieces and nephews:
Mary Jellerson and her husband Ray, Michael O'Sullivan and his wife
Deborah, and Niall O'Sullivan and his wife Joyce, all of Albuquerque, N.M.;
Eileen O'Sullivan, Moira O'Sullivan, and Patrick O'Sullivan, all of Illinois;
Sheila O'Sullivan, Carbondale, IL; Stephen O'Sullivan and his wife Patricia,
Greenville, WI; and Daniel O'Sullivan and his wife Karen, of Winston Salem,
N.C.; eighteen grand nieces and nephews; seven great grand nieces and nephews,
as well as many cousins in Ireland, England, and Canada, the Sisters of the
Daughters of St. Mary of Providence who provided her with loving care
throughout the past sixty years, and the caring community at St. William's Care
Center.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, three brothers, two in infancy, Dermot and Desmond O'Sullivan, and Dr.
Donal Daly O'Sullivan, MD, and her sister-in-law, Catherine Dodsworth
O'Sullivan, RN, and one niece, Kathleen Balke.
