Charles Walters

Mundwiler & Larson announces the death of Chuck Walters, Sr., age 86, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Graceville. Chuck passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Veteran's Home in Fergus Falls.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 from 5-8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at the Mundwiler & Larson Funeral Home in Graceville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday. Father David Breu will be officiating and burial will be in the Graceville Consolidated Cemetery.

Charles Edmund Walters was the second of five children born to Edward and Rose (Dugan) Walters in Rosetown, Sack., Canada on June 15, 1926. When he was four years old, the family moved to Hallock, MN, where he grew up on the family farm. As a child, Chuck enjoyed hunting and fishing in his leisure time. He actively participated in athletics in high school, particularly football and basketball.

After graduating high school, Chuck was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 27, 1944. He served his country during WWII in the Philippines at Luzon. He was honorably discharged on May 7, 1946 with the final rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.

Upon return from the military, he attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, to study Agriculture. While there he tried out for the Gopher Men's Basketball Team, while Bud Grant was there no less. More importantly while at college he met his future wife.

Chuck was united in marriage to Joyce Slagerman on October 1, 1949. To this union, they were blessed with six children: Barb, Dee, Chuck, Jim, Julie and Dan.

After college he continued his involvement with sports as a referee for high school basketball. He then went into farming with his father, in Hallock, farming small grains and raising beef cattle. In 1958, he moved to Graceville and bought a farm with his two brothers. They farmed grain, corn, beans and raised beef cattle. He retired at the age of 75 and together with his wife Joyce, continued to operate the Lakeside Bed and Breakfast in Graceville

Chuck is of the Catholic Faith and a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. His personal hobbies were farming, hunting, fishing and involvement in the American Legion.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Joyce Walters of Graceville; his children: Barb Walters of White Bear Lake, MN, Dee (Barry Copeland) Walters of Erie, CO, Chuck (Deb) Walters of Graceville, MN, Jim (Becca) Walters of Aurora, CO, Julie (Greg) Mack of St. Louis Park, MN, and Dan (Deb) Walters of Graceville, MN; grandchildren: Jennifer (Charles) Korfmacher, Trish (David) Copeland, Tanya (Tobjay) Copeland, Chris (Amanda) Walters, Bryan (Monisha) Walters, Danielle (Matt) Green, Ashley Walters, Leah (Adam) Timberlake, Alexa Walters, Jamie Johnson, Meghan Walters, Jessica Walters, Dustin Walters and Kaitlin Walters; great-grandchildren: Zenden, Rinzin, Christian, Kaden, Isaac, Noah, Sarah and Pacey; Brothers: Tom (Martha) Walters of Blooming Prairie, MN and Ed (Madeline) Walters of Chaska, MN; and sisters: Rosemary Spandl of Eden Prairie, MN and Alice Palmquist of Chisholm, MN.

Chuck is preceded in death by his parents Ed and Rose; step-mother Hilda; brothers-in-law: George Spandl, Jim Palmquist and Jack Kennedy; Steve Hall and Jim Moe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Graceville Jesse Poole American Legion Post #297.
