Charles Gordon Ramsey was born on August 24, 1921, in Marvin, South Dakota, the son of Emil and Olena (Olesen) Ramsey. He attended grade school and high school in Marvin, SD. Charles was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Betty) K. Christensen on Sept. 19, 1942, in Los Angeles, CA. After their marriage, Betty returned to Marvin to establish their first home. Meanwhile, Charles left to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. He served from June 10, 1942, until his honorable discharge on November 11, 1945. Charles served as a radio operator during battles and campaigns in Central Europe, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, the Rhineland, and the North Apennines. Charles received the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and Five Overseas Service Bars.
After the war, Charles returned and worked for Gamble's in Milbank and Redfield from 1945-47. The couple moved to Marvin where he owned and operated Ramsey's Groceries until 1954. They then moved to Milbank where Charles worked for his Uncle Clarence Ramsey at the Coast to Coast Store. In 1958 he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier until his retirement in the early 1970s. Charles and Betty moved to St. Anthony, MN, in 1986 where they made their home for fifteen years. They returned to Milbank in 2001.
He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church, now Valley Baptist Church, in Milbank. Charles served his church as deacon, trustee, and as an usher. He also served on the Building Committee for the First Baptist Church. His hobbies and interests included hunting and gunsmithing, photography (had his own developing lab), word puzzles, and music. Charles was a member of the National Rifle Association. He also taught the Hunter Safety Course.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, Milbank; four sons, Michael and Joyce, Fridley, MN; David and Jan, Sioux Falls, SD; Paul and Debra, Norwich, CT; and Tim and Rena, Milbank; two daughters, Sally Hanson and husband Tim, Fosston, MN, and Sharon Fangsrud and husband Virgil, Moorhead, MN; fifteen grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren; and three brothers, Melvin and Norma, International Falls, MN; Ralph and Ardis, Sun City West, AZ; and Elwood, Shakopee, MN.
