Funeral services for Charles W. McGhinnis, Sr., age 87, of Big Stone Lake, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 28th, at the American Lutheran Church in Milbank. Reverend N. Craig Werling and Reverend Janine Rew-Werling will officiate. The organist will be Carol Ydstie. Chuck died on Thursday, August 19th, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Gertje-Van Lith American Legion Post #229 of Big Stone City, SD, or to the Grant County VFW Post #3486 of Milbank.
Family members are asked to meet in the church chapel by 10:00 a.m. Saturday to attend services. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank on Friday, August 27th, from 5-7 p.m. and will continue in the church Saturday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be his three sons and three grandchildren: Charles McGhinnis, Jr., Larry McGhinnis, Ken McGhinnis, David McGhinnis, Dan McGhinnis, and Dianna McGhinnis. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be presented by the Gertje-Van Lith American Legion Post #229 of Big Stone City, SD, and the Grant County VFW Post #3486 of Milbank.
Charles was born on December 30, 1922, in Morgantown, NC, to Henry H. McGhinnis and Lucy Ann Allman. He attended school through the eighth grade.
He served his country during WWII from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Charles received the European Theater Ribbon (4 Stars), the American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Medal.
After his discharge, Chuck met Esther Sahl in Washington, D.C. They married in Wagner, SD, on January 1, 1947. He worked as a car salesman while learning the electrical trade. His first electrical job was at the Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown, SD.
Six years later they moved to Belleville, MI. He worked as a journeyman electrician when the Ford Motor Company built a plant there. In 1962 they moved to Highmore, SD, where he worked as an electrician at the Big Bend Dam. They moved to Marshall, MN, in 1968 where Charles worked at Southwest Minnesota State College as an electrician. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1971 where he worked as an electrician at McKennan Hospital.
In July 1973, they moved to a home on Big Stone Lake. Charles continued as an electrician at the Big Stone Power Plant near Milbank. They then moved to Lake Charles, LA, where he worked as an electrician at a petroleum plant. They moved to Golden Valley, ND, where he worked as an electrician and was a member of the volunteer fire dept.
He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank, the IBEW Union out of Sioux Falls, SD, the Grant County VFW Post #3486 of Milbank and the Gertje-Van Lith American Legion Post #229 of Big Stone City, SD.
Survivors include his three sons: Charles McGhinnis, Jr., and wife Linda, Wake, N.C.; Larry McGhinnis and wife LaVon, Carol Stream, IL.; and Ken McGhinnis and wife Bobbe Jo, Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren: David McGhinnis and wife Kelli, Gloucester, VA; Dan McGhinnis and wife Heather, Elgin, Ill., and Dianna McGhinnis, Edwardsville, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther (October 22, 2005), their daughter, Linda Marie McGhinnis (1961), and ten brothers and sisters.
