Carol Thorpe

Funeral services for Mrs. Carol Thorpe, age 78, of Wilmot, SD, and formerly of Marvin, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at the Wilmot Lutheran Church in Wilmot, SD. The Reverend Steve Moberg will officiate. Carol died on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. The organist will be Janice Vreim and the soloist will be Chad Lauritsen. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Monday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church on Monday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim and Sheri Wendland, David Thorpe, Chad Lauritsen, Jason Lauritsen, Harrison Lauritsen, Coleman Lauritsen, Becky Gonzales, Tina Thorpe, Aubree Carol Lauritsen, and Christian Dave Gonzales. Active pallbearers will be Roy Greiner, Jeff Bunting, Gerald Christensen, Leon Gapp, Russell Hicks, and Dick O'Farrell. Burial will be in the Osceola No. 1 Cemetery at Marvin, SD.
Carol was born on March 4, 1929, in rural Summit, SD, the daughter of John and Emma (Hartman) Quale. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Summit High School. She was united in marriage to Garth "Bud" Thorpe on November 7, 1948, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Summit. Following marriage, they lived at "Thorpe's Hideout" near Marvin until 2003. Carol suffered a paralyzing stroke in July 1979. They briefly lived in Milbank during some of Bud's years as Grant County Sheriff. They moved to their current home in Wilmot, SD, in October 2003. She was a homemaker.
Carol was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Marvin, SD, and the VFW Auxiliary. She loved to entertain and continued to do so with Bud's help, especially during the last several years.
Survivors include her husband, Garth "Bud" Thorpe, Wilmot, SD; her daughter Velna Hasch and husband Dean, McCool Junction, NE; her son, Tim Thorpe, Wichita, KS; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister Nadine Bakker and husband Howard, Lake Havasu City, AZ; two brothers, Keith Quale and wife Opal, Webster, SD, and Curt Quale, Granite Falls, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents, three brothers, two sisters, and one son-in-law, Terry Lauritsen, preceded Carol in death.
